Gimme 5: Evans Blue

In which Eric McClanahan lists his 5 favorite Evans Blue tracks up to this point in their career.

1. “The Pursuit”

Album: The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends (2007)

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that this wasn’t a big rock radio hit, but I am. “The Pursuit” was the first single off of the album that followed Evans Blue’s first real hit, “Cold (But I’m Still Here)”. Maybe (former) lead singer, Kevin Matisyn, was just too lyrically vulnerable for rock radio in 2007. Or maybe they were too complex for the format. Maybe he didn’t growl enough, or sound enough like Scott Stapp. Whatever the problem was, the band decided to kick him out after the first two albums and went with a much more cookie-cutter rock band vocalist. And that’s why the only songs you’ll see on this post are from the first two Evans Blue albums.

2. “Beg”

Album: The Melody And The Energetic Nature of Volume (2006)

This is another track that shows Evans Blue just didn’t really play by the radio rock band rules of the day. They may not seem all that wild and crazy to someone who loves mewithoutYou, but to someone who listens to Nickelback, I think they may have been.

3. “Dear Lucid, Our Time Is Right Now”

Album: The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends (2007)

“Dear Lucid…” is a little more conventional than the previous two, but I just love the chorus melody and lyrics about dancing away while the bullets fly.

4. “Cold (But I’m Still Here)”

Album: The Melody And The Energetic Nature of Volume (2006)

This is the song that first caught my attention, and rock radio’s, as well. With an opening lyric like “Hello, I’m your martyr, will you be my gangster?’, it’s hard to not perk up your ears a little. “Cold” played by the rules enough to get airplay, but I could tell there was something unique (it was obviously Kevin Matisyn).

5. “Painted”

Album: The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends (2007)

A 9-minute song with a killer chorus hook and a wild ride of an ending. What’s not to love?
